South Australian RC Laser State Titles, Mawson Lakes, 10th June 2018

sa laserThis year’s titles were our second ever titles and our first to be sailed at our home territory of Mawson Lakes. We again had a healthy clan of eight Victorian sailors, which when combined with some of our local fleet gave a total of eighteen boats. The briefing was held in very calm conditions, but the forecast was for a 10 knot northeaster and within about half an hour of the briefing the wind arrived. The six races sailed before lunch were all sailed with A rigs, although nose-diving became an increasing problem as the morning progressed. It also quickly emerged that Scott Fleming was a clear leader this year, as with the exception of one brilliant race by Jurgen Luther, Scott won four or five of the other races. Scott’s boat speed and his ability to pick wind shifts in the fluky conditions separated him from Scott Mitchell and the rest of the fleet.

South Australian IOM State Championships 2018

Hart’s Mill Port Adelaide Hosted by ARCYRC Inc.

Day One Saturday 14th April 2018

After almost three months of summer with little to no rain the season changes with a forecast of 30 knots and rain greeting the 21 entrants, a terrific response with nine interstate competitors. The fleet was high quality with a good sample of past top 5 National competitors.

Number 3 rigs were the order with no one changing from their initial assessment. No significant trouble with gear however Norman Wallis had to retire with hull “fatigue”, his boat not himself.

Scott Mitchell sailed consistently and held a good lead with Ross Bennett and Sean Wallis holding the minor placings.

SA Marblehead Ranking event 11 March 2018

A warm sunny day greeted a small but keen fleet of skippers for the first SA RM Ranking event of 2018. The forecast was for a building southerly which suited the Pat course pretty well. Skippers were undecided on A or B rigs first up with most choosing B to best suit the early gusting breeze. Some changes were made after race 1 with most happy on B rigs.

Scott had a great start to the day with Paul close on his heels and Ben keeping them honest pinching a couple of wins. As Paul improved the Indie’s performance as the day went on the overall results of the day narrowed to be neck and neck as racing progressed. Late in the day, the regatta lead was changing after each race and the battle for 3rd (Tim Arland) & 4th (Ben Morris) was also tight and changing regularly.

Towards the end there were only 4 of the original 9 starters left with fatigue setting in and some boats having minor failures. This made it harder for those needing to get a break over a competitor. In the end it was Paul (23 points) narrowly winning from Scott (26 points), both sailing home built Brad Gibson designed Indie, then a gap back to Tim Arland (47 points) and Ben Morris (50 points) both sailing Red Ant F3’s.

It was good to see some new faces with John from Paris Creek at his first RM event and Alan Bessell arriving late but showing some glimpses of the speed of the Starkers when the breeze was solid.

SA Whitrod Memorial IOM 2018

Whitrod Memorial IOM 2018

Sailed at the Patawolonga on Sunday 21st January 2018

Hosted by Adelaide Radio Control Yacht Racing Club

A good fleet of 14 yachts had excellent sailing conditions with SSW winds all day.  Wind strength varied from about 12 knots to 15 knots with some stronger gusts.  Most yachts started on 'A' rigs and changed to 'B' with just a couple hanging on all day to the larger rig.  The breeze did fade at for the last two or three races.

Scott Mitchell dominated the day but was being pushed by Brett Osborn and Paul Littledyke (before he had winch issues).  Most yachts showed speed at times but it comes down to consistency.

The event ran smoothly thanks to Len and a couple of helpers and again showed The Pat as an excellent venue in the SW winds with the course close to the skippers sailing from an elevated position.
