VIC IOM Championship - 30/31st July

The PRO Yoda Thomas & his assistants Andrew Cook and Frank Katers were greeted by 17 eager skippers, 2 from WA, 3 from SA, I from NSW, 1 from QLD, 1 from across the ditch NZ with the remainder 9 from VIC .

Racing commenced at 10:05, with a fresh northerly blowing down the course, some skippers were on A rigs and found that downwind was an experience, after race one all skippers were on B rig for the remainder of the day.  By lunch, taken at 12:15 pm on day one, after 6 races, there were 5 different winning skippers, Mario Gulic, Patrick Parisienne, Kirwan Robb, Glenn Dawson and Scott Condie, racing recommenced at 1:00 pm with new names at the top of the podium apart from previously named skippers being Brett Osborn, Andrew Reid and Garth Halton, a further 10 races were completed after lunch, totalling 16 for the day, with Kirwan Robb on 45, Brett Osborn 54, Glenn Dawson 58, Patrick Parisienne 64, Scott Condie 67, Paul Littledyke 74, Scott Fleming 74, Garth Halton 79, Mario Gulic 82 and rounding out the top ten Andrew Reid 84, unfortunately some skippers experienced gear or electrical failures which kept them out of better finishes with Stephen Champion, Andrew Crocker, Benson Or and Paul Littledyke having to sit out a number of races at the end of the day due to electrical issues, during the day, two protests were heard and resolved by mediation.

Day two started with patches of glass and a zephyr from the north, the first race started at 10:30 am with 16 skippers experiencing directional fluctuations of up to 180 degrees with the breeze tending towards north westerly which required a major course change. Race two for the day started at 10:50 am again with directional fluctuations so it was decided after the race finished taking an early lunch at 11:15 am.

Racing restarted at 12:00 noon after another course change with a light nor nor westerly breeze and was effected by other outside distractions, which kept the skippers on their toes up and down the control area. After the brief heart palpitations the recently married Patrick Parisienne kept focused and won race 19.

As the distraction paddled away, most skippers improved their concentration levels to the task at hand with Scott Condie, Kirwan Robb, Roger Paul, Glenn Dawson, Garth Halton and Kirwan Robb taking out the last six races. As the breeze was slowly disappearing it was decided that the regatta would be over after 25 races giving four drops to the overall result.

As always there are the volunteers who offer there time to assist with such an event officiating, setting the course, preparing the lunches, serving the lunches, scoring, etc. we wish to express our appreciation to Andrew Cook, Frank Katers, Zandra Thomas, Andrew Reid, Rob Nowak, Patrick Parisienne, Kirwan Robb, Scott Fleming and another who not only provided his time but also his special equipment to take extraordinary specific action photographs on the Saturday when the breeze was fresh and action a plenty, a special thank you to John Boys a link to these photos will be provided soon and last but not least the PRO Yoda.

It was great to see one of Victoria’s elder statesmen in attendance on Sunday namely Geoff Dawson, a very special person in the sport, a Life Member of the Paterson Lakes Club and someone who has always put up his hand when work had to be done for club and state events, no more face plants Geoff.
