WA IOM South West Championship - 6th May

11may

2018 Busso Bash

Eleven skippers made the trek down to Busselton on the weekend of May 5 and 6 to join five skippers from Busselton and one from Albany for a weekend of IOM racing.

The venue at Provence Estate had been landscaped and the lake filled since our last visit. Sailing took place at the wide end of the lake where the viewing was from a nicely elevated platform. Parking was a little way from the sailing area, but not too bad at all.

Saturday was a beautiful day, as the sun shone all day. There was a light to moderate, but quite even wind from the north-east. The wind blew from left to right and varied enough for it to be challenging. Everyone had their A rigs up all day.

WA IOM Great Southern Championship - 24/25th March

2018 Great Southern Championship and Albany Cup.

On a grey, overcast weekend in March, eleven skippers from Perth made the trip down Albany Hwy to visit our friends in Albany. Three skippers joined the fleet, whilst a few others volunteered their time to officiate.

Most drove down on Friday, stopping off at various country bakeries to sample the various pies and pastries on offer in the little country towns along the way. It was important to get a handle on where the best places to dine are, as we have planned for the Western Australian State Championships to be held in Albany in December and we need to be prepared!

WA IOM Championship - 25/26th November 2017

4dec

The 2018 WA  IOM Championship was held over two days with greatly  varying conditions which  tested  both the sailors and race officer Warren Rock assisted by Bob Paton.

The first day started in A rig moderate conditions in lumpy seas on the Swan river.

Starting well proved difficult for both of the fleets in the 17 boat field due to the waves and close proximity of the shoreline. Experience sailors found themselves sometime in an OCS or stalled on the line at the last moment sting themselves up for a long chase to the front runners.

It became apparent after some top sailors found themselves in trouble at first windward mark with  boats washed sideways putting themselves into contact or falling short.  Mark rounding judgement was being tested and many fell short.

After several races the south west wind increased into B rig conditions with all boats changing rigs. Exciting sailing at the top of B rig kept everyone on their tippy tows with Sean Wallis with his V10 showing his speed and good tactics and Glenn Dawson taking some wins and consistently in the first three places.   After a slow start Ross Bennet was able to get into the small numbers but cheated himself out of a certain first place when leading at the final race of the day being passed on a wave at the penultimate moment by the good captain sailing the V8 when in Ross’s own words he ‘ wrongly ‘waggled instead of wiggled’ trying to stay on the plane.
